Chapter 9

JAMES SCOTT BRANTON and his sister, Sarah Jane, were born ten minutes apart. James minutes before midnight and Sarah minutes after. Twins with different birthdays. Tyce looked wired and wide-eyed. It was time to leave the new parents on their own. “I’ve got to see what’s happening with Brick and Cory,” she said to her cousin. “Tell Lisa I’ll stop by tomorrow if she needs anything from the house.”

Tyce nodded. “Thanks. I’ve got phone calls to make and I’ll stay here for the night.” He’d taken to holding the babies like a pro. Like a natural father, she thought, as she brushed his cheek with a light kiss.

“Congratulations. You’ll be a great dad,” she said on a husky note.

When she pulled into the driveway at the house, Brick’s truck sat where he’d parked it. The porch light was on but the rest of the house looked dark. Rain had swept into the area and she made a dash to the door. Before she got there, the door swung wide and Brick stood there, outlined in the glow from the porch light.

He looked wary and hopeful and anxious. “Everybody okay?”

She drew up short. “Yes, babies and mama are doing fine.”

“Tyce?”

“He’s calling all the relatives and he’s happy and excited.” She smiled up into his eyes.

Brick nodded and stood aside to let her in. “I’m glad. Twins must be a lot to handle.”

“They’ll manage. They’ve got me here now and Tyce’s mom and sister live nearby and Lisa’s mom is flying in tomorrow.” Lisa and her mother shared a strained relationship. But her mother was sober now and not mean anymore. At least, that’s what Tyce had said when she’d been surprised that the woman would show up.

She slipped out of her coat and hung it in the hall closet while she kicked off her boots. “Cory’s asleep?”

“Out cold. He wanted to stay up to see the babies, but once I said they wouldn’t be home tonight, he wanted a story.” He blinked. “So I got to read him his favorite.”

“The Rescue Patrol book? He likes them and their television show.”

“I figured. I’ve got the earworm of their theme song ringing in my head.”

She chuckled. “Welcome to my world,” she said blithely. Something in his face and his hardened stance caught her. “What?”

“This is all new to me. Reading him a story, tucking him in, and watching him eat.” His large body tensed.

“If I could go back I’d change what I did.”

“Would you?”

“I wouldn’t run.” She set her hand on his sleeve. His forearm tensed as if he couldn’t bear to have her touch him. She released his arm and stood back. “But I did run and now Cory and I are back. I promise, Brick, I’ll not take him away like that again. All I can do is look to the future, and you’re in Cory’s if you want to be.”

He nodded. Then he stepped around her and led the way into the kitchen where he threw on the lights and settled at the counter.
